Summertiiiiiime! And it's hot as balls!!
This June has been a delight riiiiiight up until now, so I thought I would pass this uncomfortable Monday afternoon by remembering cooler times earlier in the month.
DRINKING
In honour of her mom Patr coming for a visit, Katr prepared an alcoholic beverage that has become THE drink of the summer: The Bourbon Slush. This is apparently quite a common drink down south (in the U.S., not in my vagina) but I had never heard of it. I *believe* Katr used this Bourbon Slush recipe but did NOT add the two cups of sugar, because that shit was plenty sweet without it. This is not a great photo of it but holy Jesus, was it good. A must try for you summer lushes out there!
A TRIP TO THE ISLAND
Katr's mom Patr came out for a visit at the beginning of the month and we thought it would be fun to take her and Princess Emmeline Louise over to Vancouver Island for some seaside respite. Emmy Lou has been working so hard, staring at people and successfully whizzing outdoors, that we figured she could use a getaway.
We rented a place in Saanich right close to the ferry, which we found on VRBO. It was called the Cleo Beachfront Cottage. In the descriptions, the owner promised that seals, otters, harbour porpoises, owls, hawks, ravens, bunnies, squirrels and "delightful quail" would all be frequent visitors to the area.
On the first day, we saw none of these things. Tension was high.
The owner, J, stopped by the next day to water her glorious garden and so Patr was able to really put the screws to her about the lack of wildlife. Clearly shaken, J must have had a talk with the fauna, for the next day, eagles and otters began to appear and I saw a bunny taking a dust bath. Nicely played, J.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay on the Island, this place comes highly recommended by me. The property is lush and woodsy, the house is large and airy and the views are spectacular. The owner is also super nice. If you book it, tell J the fat lesbians with the ancient dog sent you.
WHALE WATCHING
We went whale watching and saw a pod of transient orcas! How many hours was the tour? Three and a half. How many pictures did I take? One. This one. Because this tour made us wear FULL BODY LIFE PRESERVERS and I thought it was HILARIOUS.
OCTOPUS
The owner of Cleo Cottage also worked at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre in Sidney and when she offered us free passes, we said yes! It was pretty cool. The octopus in particular.
BUTCHART GARDENS
The last time I went to Butchart Gardens was in March of 1990, on my Grade 9 band trip. I didn't give a shit about plants back then, so I don't remember much (my greatest memory of that trip, of course, is my friend Jech getting her ears pierced SECRETLY, against her mother's wishes, ZOMG crazyyyyy!!!). This time it was awesome, because Patr knew so many of the plants, so it was like having our own private horticultural tour guide.
Naturally, these were Katr's favourite:
Then, once we'd seen it all, we went for High Tea, where the classy servers pretended like we weren't real real sweaty.
Some highlights of this trip included:
1. This sexy boar looking sexy.
2. That Patr lost her credit card in the washroom and SOMEONE ACTUALLY RETURNED IT to Lost and Found.
3. I saw some art that made me weepy in the art gallery and Katr told me to buy it. It's called "133 Water St" and it's by Canadian artist Joanna Drummond. I seriously can't stop looking at it. I don't what it is about it that really gives me the feels but that's okay - that's the point of art. It's sneaky like that.
We were sad to leave the Island but that pesky "working for money" thing always pulls you back in. But what a lovely time.
HOMOSEXUALS GETTING MARRIED
So, the SCOTUS decision on same sex marriage came out on the SAME DAY that our dear dear lesbian friends Boka (coincidentally, an American) and Cawi were tying the knot! We were honoured to butt into their special day with all of our lesbian wedding ideas. The decor was lovely, the mood was festive, the BBQ was delicious and the brides were radiant. Congratulations, ladies!!!!! LoveWins!!!!!
